Hood Family and Coal Mining

Edmonston Colliery

'Coal Check Bill' - for the week of 14th January 1760

A printed copy of this was included as part of a report prepared for the Carron Company to demonstrate the method used at Edmonston for paying rent to the owners of leased coalfields, based on the amount of coal produced.
I have omitted the rental part of the document and included only the part showing the coal output by the colliers.

  • The amount of coal produced by each collier is shown in hundredweights, and split into Great Coal (Gr.) and Small Coal (Sm.) - the small pieces of coal were worth about half the price of the large or great pieces.
  • I have left out details of the rents paid and other parts of the accounts.
  • Original spellings and abbreviations have been retained.
